What to Wear for Your High School Senior Portrait Session

Your senior year is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone, and your portraits should reflect who you are right now. One of the biggest questions we get from seniors is, "What should I wear?" The good news is that you don't need an entirely new wardrobe—you just need outfits that make you feel confident, comfortable, and authentically you.

Here are our top tips for choosing the perfect outfits for your senior portrait session.

1. Wear Something That Feels Like You

The best photos happen when you're comfortable. Choose clothing that matches your personal style instead of following current trends. These photos are an expression of who you are today, and there is no wrong answer for how you want to express yourself through your clothing.  Whether your style is classic, boho, sporty, western, edgy, or chic, your portraits should showcase your personality. Don’t be afraid to shop from something new, but remember this is a time to document this time in your life, so a favorite classic outfit or style will be something to look back on with great nostalgia.

2. Bring Multiple Outfit Options

Depending on your collection choice, all our sessions come with at least 1 outfit change if not more. We have a portable changing room so changing on site is always available. Even if you only have one outfit change in your collection, it's never a bad idea to bring more options if you can’t decide before your session. If you are debating between looks, sometimes the background of your location can help make the final decision if you are struggling to make a final decision about what to bring.

Consider including:

• A casual everyday outfit
• A dressy or elevated look
• Something that represents your hobbies or interests (sports uniform, dance attire, letter jacket, musical instrument, etc.)
• A seasonal outfit if it fits your session

Having multiple options gives your gallery more variety and allows you to create artwork you'll love for years. And having outfits with layers can help elevate your poses and give you something to work with to make posing feel more natural and authentic.

3. Choose Colors That Complement You

Solid colors and rich earth tones photograph beautifully. Soft neutrals, blues, greens, burgundy, rust, cream, and warm browns tend to photograph especially well outdoors.

If you love patterns, keep them simple. Avoid busy prints, large logos, or graphics that can distract from your face.  These rules obviously do not apply to school uniforms, letter jackets and school spirit looks. If you are ever concerned about a print or color, we are always available ahead of time to consult on a final look.

4. Make Sure Everything Fits Well

Clothing that's too tight or too loose can be uncomfortable and may not photograph as well. Try on your outfits before your session to make sure you can move, sit, and walk comfortably. Things to keep in mind are skirt lengths, long skirts can make for fun action shots. Short skirts or dresses may not feel as comfortable to sit in so wearing shorts underneath can help with comfort while shooting, but they are still fun to work with as well.

5. Don't Forget the Shoes

Your shoes will often be visible in your photos. Clean them ahead of time and choose shoes that coordinate with each outfit. When shooting outdoors it's always a good idea to bring the ‘in-between’ shoes for walking to each location. Dress shoes and high heals can be tricky to walk in nature in and can get dirty from spot to spot.

6. Accessorize Thoughtfully

Accessories add personality without overwhelming your look.

Consider:

• Simple jewelry
• Hats
• Layers like denim or leather jackets
• Scarves
• Meaningful heirlooms

Less is often more, but styling your outfit with an accessory can take your portraits to the next level.

7. Prepare Before Your Session

A little preparation goes a long way.

• Steam or iron your outfits.
• Remove tags and stickers.
• Hang clothing instead of folding it.
• Bring a lint roller.
• Pack everything the night before.

Being prepared helps your session run smoothly and keeps the focus on having fun.
