From Top 20 Finalist to First Place Community Pick: Desmond’s Vogue Dogue Story

This summer we entered a portrait of Desmond in Vogue’s Dogue Cover competition, that would be published on their Instagram account.

We love to photograph our dog Desmond, and he equally loves to be photograph and we have taken some great photos of him over the years. But one of our favorite portraits of him stood out because of how amazing he looked. And we hoped it would be something that might capture the eye of the judges at Vogue, but knowing that this was a huge competition we didn’t know what to expect. So we submitted the photo and hoped for the best, we certainly weren’t expecting what happened next…

Desmond Makes the Top 20

Out of all the entries Vogue received, Desmond was selected as one of the Top 20 finalists.

It was thrilling to have the recognition and to be selected as a finalist from thousands of entries and featured on the Vogue Instagram page. So many people commented and said his portrait was by far the best. There’s something about seeing an image you made recognized by a publication as iconic as Vogue.

At that point, we were thrilled just to be there, and even though he wasn’t selected as the cover model he did have the attention of the fans of Vogue.

The Community Pick

After they announced the winner of the Cover competition, the magazine opened a public vote to see who they would have like to have seen on the cover. After a few days of voting the public’s voice was heard and Desmond was named the Vogue Dogue Community Pick.

Our fluffy, occasionally aloof, very good-haired poodle had officially won the community vote.  It was so rewarding to have taken a portrait that got to show the world not only how handsome he is but how a great portrait is a profound way to document the special people and animals in our lives.

Having Desmond selected as a Top 20 Dogue finalist would have been enough. Having the community choose him as their favorite made it even more special. But for us, the best part is that this entire experience started with something incredibly simple.

A portrait we loved. A portrait that captured personality. A portrait that felt like him. And that's a pretty wonderful reminder of just how powerful one photograph can be.
